Henry of Carinthia. Transformation of historians's perception of his rule.
Horáková, Jana ; Charvátová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Sládková, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with view on the figure of Henry of Carinthia, whose image was usually unflattering in the works of Czech historians. This view of Henry is based on an important source, the Zbraslav Chronicle, which, among other things, also describes the period when Henry of Carinthia governed in the Kingdom of Bohemia (1306-1310). For a long time, Zbraslav Chronicle was considered as a set of true testimonies. The author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, very influential Cistercian Petr Žitavský, acted as a direct witness to the events described, and also due to some almost diary-like entries in certain parts of the chronicle, no one doubted the relevance of his entries. In other chronicles, Czech historians adopt the perspective of the author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, as they consider it a reliable source. Thus, Henry of Carinthia entered the consciousness of the majority based on the description of Petr Žitavský, as a weak monarch without vision and the necessary skills of a successful ruler. At the beginning of the 21st century, Jakub Razim came up with a new perspective on the Zbraslav Chronicle and thereby influenced the subsequent work of other historians. The aim of this thesis is not only the analysis of the passages devoted to the figure of Henry in the Zbraslav Chronicle, but...

Chalupová, Helena ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee)
The master's thesis deals with one of the specifics of the cultural history of the Czech lands in the Early Modern period - i. e. the general perception of the afterlife (approximately between 1500 and 1800) and revenant issues. A revenant is meant originally a human being, who, after his death, for various reasons returns to the light of the living world, with exhibits of material (revived corpses, zombies, vampires, fexts) and immaterial (spirits, white ladies, wild hunting). In this respect, the main source are Czech demonological legends. One part of the study is to evaluate the social, religious and cultural aspects that had effect on what was said above in the specific historical period. The main emphasis is placed on the individual cases of revenants in the Czech lands, preserved in historical sources, as well as comparison with the same case in other European countries. The study will also focus on the description of biographies of historical personalities, drawing conclusions about what may have caused the conviction of being revenant.

Hymn and its Tradition in Late Medieval Bohemia
Mráčková, Veronika ; Hlávková, Lenka (advisor) ; Vlhová-Wörner, Hana (referee) ; Gancarczyk, Pawel Tomasz (referee)
The Abstract The Hymn and its Tradition in Late Medieval Bohemia Veronika Mráčková, Charles University, Prague The present thesis concerns the monophonic and polyphonic office hymns preserved in late medieval Bohemian sources. The author is mainly focused on the repertoire of the hymns written in Strahov Codex from around 1467. This manuscript of uncertain provenance contains an enormous collection of three- and four- voice polyphonic hymns which show plenty of the local characteristics. These domestic traits may be identified not only through texts devoted to indigenous Saints, but also through the melodies which form the cantus firmus in the upper voice of the hymns. The identification of these monophonic tunes in other plainchant sources could help us to determine the origin of Strahov Codex. Additionally, it is clear that this mensural manuscript contains not only music of a high artistic standard, but also a number of less polished compositions, and that it is thus an important witness to the existence of a wide range of daily musical activities in late medieval Bohemia. A crucial part of this dissertation is a critical edition of the monophonic hymn tunes preserved in Roudnice Psalter, as well as an edition of the selected polyphonic hymns written in Strahov Codex.

Music from an Objective Machine: Folk Music and the Phonograph
Kratochvíl, Matěj
Sound recording began to play a more important role in many areas of human life from the end of the 19th century. The influence of this technology was manifested the most significantly in the area of music industry, where a new form of music consumption was born with the invention and spreading of Edison’s phonograph. In addition, however, this invention influenced the sphere of science as well. The field called ethnomusicology now started to form in approximately the same time that the phonograph appeared, and it may be said that without this device ethnomusicology would have never been what it is today. The possibility of capturing the elusive musical expression, play and study it over and over again, opened a path for scientists to grasp the music cultures of the whole world without being limited by the system of European music notation. At the same time, however, sound recording brought various limitations as well as the danger of a distorted perception of sound sources, and directed the speculations of music towards certain stereotypes, with which ethnomusicology was then coping for a large part of the 20th century. In the Bohemian Lands, the awareness of the technical novelty spread relatively soon among the lay public as well as in the academic circles, but its practical application in the area of the documentation of traditional music culture in the period before World War I was relatively rare. The sound documents that have been preserved were not published until the last decades.
